Did you know that the oldest piece of pearl jewelry is almost 3,000 years old? Can you think of anything off the top of your head that is 3,000 years old?! This fact says something very special about the value of pearl jewelry in fashion. This week at Inspired Silver we are doing a really exciting $9.00 Pearl Jewelry sale, so we thought it would be fun to give you a bit more background on pearls through history….
Here are a few really interesting facts about Pearl Fashion History:
In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the ultimate symbol of wealth and social standing. Pearl necklaces were so highly sought after that a law was developed: the wearing and ownership of pearls was restricted to the Elite only.
The Greeks used the Pearl in its association with love and marriage. In the Metropolitan museum of New York is a beautiful 2,300 year old Greek Pearl Necklace that has been on display for 100 years. Although the Luster is gone from this piece it is still an outstanding piece of Ancient Pearl Jewelry.
Fair maidens of nobility cherished delicate Pearl Necklaces, gallant knights often wore pearls onto the battlefield. During the Dark Ages the belief was that the magic possessed by the lustrous gems would protect them from harm.
One of the most famous collections of pearl jewelry belonged to no other than Princess Diana. You would be hard pressed to find her out and about without some gorgeous pearls draped around her neck or ears. Stunning is all that comes to mind when I think of Diana and her pearls (shown below in a few favorite pieces).
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again… Pearl Jewelry is on top of the list of staple items that every girl and woman should have. No matter what the occasion, what time of year or where, pearls will bring any outfit to life. The style is timeless, and not many other kinds of jewelry can claim that description. Pearls will never go out of style and if taken care of properly, will last you a lifetime. Take it from some of the most fashionable women in history (below) like Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Taylor and Sandra Bullock… pearls are the way to go.
Over the years you might have heard some myths and folklore about pearls and pearl jewelry. It’s hard to really say what is and isn’t true because everything is just here say. Here are some interesting Historical Legends about pearls:
Cultured or freshwater pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money, protection, and luck. Pearls are thought to give wisdom through experience, to quicken the laws of karma and to cement engagements and love relationships. They are thought to keep children safe.
Early Chinese myths told of pearls falling from the sky when dragons fought. Ancient legend says that pearls were thought to be the tears of the gods and the Greeks believed that wearing pearls would promote marital bliss and prevent newlywed women from crying.
It is also said by some that giving pearls as a gift is bad luck. That you should only wear pieces that you yourself have purchased, unless the jewelry is gifted with pennies. I can safely say that one of my most prized possessions is a long strand of pearls given to me by my great great grandmother. I will cherish this piece of jewelry for the rest of my life, and gladly hand it down to my own daughter some day. Whatever you believe and whatever legends and myths you choose to live by is up to you and you alone.
